Lamiglas Rods The Key to Winning
With the first round of the 2008 ABT Bass rounds being held on the rising waters of Lake St Clair in NSW, it was by no means a hot bite for competitors. For champion non boater, Mathew Fowler, having a kit of Blue Acres Lamiglas rods was the winning recipe. Four rods from the Blue Acres range provided him with the ability to adapt to different styles of fishing to suit the bites around the dam. Using a XMG 50 EXS702BA, EXC704BA, Certified Pro XS702BA and XC703BA rods Matt had the bases covered.

Early in the first session Matt worked shallow banks with a surface presentation with a cupped faced popper and the XS702BA. The successful technique was a subtle pop followed by a pause. As the sun rose higher in the sky Matt’s boater moved further out from the edge targeting deeper fish. Matt then alternated between the XC703BA with a lipless crankbait and the EXS704BA for slow rolling spinnerbaits.
Session two his boater followed the suspended school fish in deep water with Matt using a jig head rigged soft plastic on the ultra sensitive XMG 50 EXS702BA. Dropping his lure to the bottom and slow rolling it through the fish this rod enabled Matt to sense the subtle bites of these fish allowing him to slow his retrieve for the fish to inhale the lure.
Sundays third and final session had Matt again using a different pattern with the new Ecogear vibration baits, the VX35 in olive on the XS702BA and VX40 in black on his EXS702BA. Targeting fish suspended high in 40ft of water Matt let the VX’s sink to 8-12 feet before slow rolling them back through the fish.
For using exclusively Blue Acres Lamiglas rods Matt has won himself Grand Final entry fee paid by Blue Acres thanks to the ABT sponsor bonus program.
After a slow start Blue Acres Steve McDonald finished a credible 8th in the Pro Division after weighing the heaviest bag for the tournament in the Final session. Steve’s 2.61kg bag filled the live well with his first two bites for the morning while casting Ecogear PP60’s to surface feeding fish. He positioned the boat in 6–10ft of water on medium sloping banks and used an EXS722BA rod for long cast parallel to the newly submerged vegetation. This enabled him to keep his Ecogear popper in the strike zone for the entire retrieve and maximise his chance of a bite which resulted in two long, but skinny fish of 52 and 47 cm.
"With the slightly longer 7'2" rod I was able to cast at water disturbance and grass pockets quite some distance away. When the two scorers hit I had a lot of line in the water. With the freshly submerged cover there was a lot for them to pull me through, the extra length of this XMG 50 also helped control the fish and direct them to deeper water."

Pro Staffer Andrew Pulbrook once again showed constancy to be competitive throughout the event. Having been mid top ten during the tournament Pulley collected 85 AOY points for the new season. Consistent results like this last year had him sitting as high as 2nd. The Canobolas Marine Tackle Shop Manger had his best finish in the 2007 ABT Bass AOY with a Top Ten placing.
